If it can go wrong it will go wrong is the most optimistic statement I know. Optimistic because, at least I can be certain of this one thing in an uncertain world!
In social action, between the statement and the enactment is always a process of interpretation and an evaluation of possible implications for self/or other before a choice is made and action undertaken.
Excluding all room for ‘errors’ or deliberate re-interpretation is a
bureaucratic fantasy. When, inevitably it fails to be applied, then
the demands for closer surveillance and control are again turned up a notch
generating what I have elsewhere called, the paranoid curriculum which
leads in turn to what I like to call ‘stealth curricula’. These include
all the tactical and strategic ploys involved to manage impressions and
create the sense of something other than what is really happening is going
on.
